Destination weddings are becoming more and more common, and we’re not surprised! Who wouldn’t love the chance to spend a weekend away at a beautiful location celebrating a wedding with their nearest and dearest!? And whether you’re going halfway around the world or a different state, getting your wedding dress to your venue safely is a priority. Here are a few useful tips to keep in mind.

Pick in your suitcase

If you choose to pack your wedding gown be sure to pack it in your carry-on bag. Sometimes you will get lucky and have a flight attendant that is more than happy to hang it in the closet during your flight. Just don’t forget to grab it before you exit the plane! However, you can’t always rely on the kindness of strangers and you may not get so lucky with having a courteous flight attendant. To be safe, when packing the gown in your carry on, place it in a lightweight garment bag that fits in the overhead bin. Folding it with layers of tissue paper will soften the folds and help keep the dress from wrinkling.

Be sure to pack a travel steamer for when you arrive at your destination

If you forget this step, don’t worry - hanging your dress in a closed bathroom with the shower running on hot can create a steam bath to help relax those wrinkles. Be careful with this trick of the trade if your gown has a lot of embellishments and beading, this could cause details to fall off depending on how they were attached to the gown (some brands glue the beads on their gowns instead of sew them, if this is the case, the steam can cause the beads to fall off, so please steam with caution!)

Carry on

For brides who are just too nervous about putting their wedding gown in a bag for the duration of a flight, there is always the carry on option. However, depending on the style of your dress this could be tricky. Depending on the airline, you may be able to store the dress in a cupboard once you’re on board, but don’t just assume that will be an option. Call ahead to inquire with the airline and let them know your situation. The last thing you want is to get on board and find there’s nowhere to store your beloved dress!

We’ve heard of brides actually purchasing a plane ticket for the seat next to them for their gown to sit in.

It sounds insane, but for many the price of a plane ticket may be worth it. Not having to worry about your gown being shoved in a bag or if you ship it, it has the possibility to get lost. This way your gown is by your side at all times and you can enjoy a stress free plane ride to your big day!
