Ok, before you do anything else - get real. Forget all magazines and stories and reality shows. Your day is your day and you don't need any statistics or trends to set up your wedding budget. The truth is, just like with anything else, budgets for weddings do vary. A LOT.
The following steps should help you get started minimize

Step One: CREATE GUEST LIST
One variable that affects wedding budgets a lot is the wedding guest list. When it comes to creating the guest list you can do this as step number one (as it will define your needed budget a lot), then you can adjust those numbers according how much you wish to/can spend on your wedding day.

Step two: SET UP PRIORITY LIST
Grab your fiancé and start making THE most important list of your priorities. Is photography important to you? Is delicious food what you care about the most? Do you want amazing floral centerpieces or are you more of a DIY bride? For example you can have priorities like this: 1) venue 2) photography 3) dress while he might prefer 1) food 2) booze 3) DJ. Then write a list of things that matter to you the least as these will be elements you are not going to spend your money on. Compare your lists and see if you can agree on the importance of certain elements. This will help setting your wedding budget on the right foot. And also, if you spend money on your dress he won't get surprises, after all it was on your list!

Step three: FIGURE OUT HOW MUCH YOU CAN AFFORD NOW
Figure how much you can spend without taking loans or getting into debt that will make you miserable. What amount would make you happy? Every couple has a budget. It might be too low for what you wish for your day or you might be able to get more than what you thought, but every couple has that number that they can and are willing to spend. If you're struggling to answer these questions, ask yourself: What scares you? What amount you don’t want to spend?

Step four: HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU HAVE TO PLAN?
The longer time to plan the more you'll be able to save. Think about time that you'd be comfortable planning. This time should be long enough for you to feel relaxed and at ease. When it comes to your budget, having more time to plan means you won’t be pressured to make quick choices and you'll be able to save along the way. If you know that you can put certain amounts of money aside for your wedding budget, how much you have already, and if you know how much you wish to spend, you can calculate early on in the process the number of months you'll need to get there.

Step 5: REASEARCH AND PROJECTIONS
Budget projections are what we do for our clients at a very early stage of planning.

We take into consideration the first two steps (wedding vision/feeling/style/atmosphere they want to accomplish + list of priorities + amount that will keep them happy) and we create projection of their budget, allocating certain amounts to each category. It will help you stay on track, remind you about things that matter to you, and will help you avoid something I call ''post wedding recession''. My clients love when I keep on reminding them about this. :)

Finally, it's time to do your research of venues and suppliers that will best match your preferences and priorities that you established earlier in your priority list.
